Collapsed Drain Repair Farnborough | No Dig Fix

I had a call last month from a homeowner just off Farnborough Street. Slow drains throughout the house, a faint smell when the wind dropped, and a patch of lawn that had gone suspiciously soft underfoot. She'd had two other companies out. Both had rodded the drain, charged her, and left. Neither had sorted it.

What We Found: The Before

We started with a CCTV drain survey. That's always step one on a job that's defeated someone else, because you can't fix what you can't see.

The camera told the story in about forty seconds. Roughly four metres out from the inspection chamber, under the side return of the garden, a length of the old clay pipe had collapsed inward. Not cracked. Not root-damaged. Collapsed. The pipe had essentially folded into itself, leaving a partial obstruction that let liquid through slowly but trapped solids, built up a blockage, and then backed the lot up into the house.

The clay was original. At a guess, 1960s installation, which puts it at over sixty years old. Clay is good pipe. But nothing lasts forever under a garden that's been loaded with foot traffic, a raised bed that someone had added without knowing the drain was underneath, and Farnborough's clay-heavy soil shifting with every wet winter.

The two companies who'd rodded it had cleared the blockage each time. The pipe itself was still crushed. The blockage came back within a week, both times. They were treating the symptom.

What We Did: The Fix

The homeowner's first question was whether we'd need to dig up the garden. Understandable. The side return had paving she'd just had re-laid.

We didn't touch a slab.

The repair method was drain relining, specifically a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner. Here's the short version of how it works: a flexible liner, pre-saturated with resin, is fed through the existing pipe from the access chamber. It's positioned across the damaged section and then inflated against the inside of the old pipe using an inversion drum and air pressure. The resin cures hard. You end up with a new pipe formed inside the old one, bonded to it, with no joints and no weak points.

We cleared the debris first with high-pressure water jetting to give the liner a clean surface to bond to. The liner went in. Cure time was around two hours. We ran the camera back through afterwards to confirm the liner had seated fully and the bore was open and clear.

Job done. The paving stayed put. The garden stayed intact. The soft patch in the lawn will firm back up as the void under it stabilises now the water ingress has stopped.

Before and After: The Numbers That Matter

The Lesson for Any Farnborough Homeowner

If your drain blocks, gets cleared, and then blocks again within a fortnight, stop paying for rodding. The blockage is not the problem. Something structural is causing it and the only way to know what is a camera survey.

Properties along Farnborough Street, and across much of South Farnborough and Farnborough Park, are sitting on older drainage runs, clay pipe mostly, that was laid decades before anyone thought about ground movement, raised beds, or the weight of an extension slab above a pipe. Age plus load plus clay soil is a reliable recipe for collapse.
